The pressure-free table

Pressure backfires: coaxing, bribing and one-more-bite turn dinner into a negotiation children learn to win by eating less. UNICEF's responsive-feeding guidance says the same as the paediatricians: feed in response to hunger and fullness cues, eat together, talk more than you direct. UNICEF: Parenting The mealtime scripts behind this guide are in 10 Ingredients, 30 Meals.

You provide, they decide

The split that ends most battles: you decide what is served and when, your child decides whether and how much. The AAP warns that promising dessert for vegetables makes the prize more exciting and the vegetable a chore, which buys nightly table battles instead of broader eating. Eat the same food, together

Children copy before they obey. The NHS advises giving your child the same food as the rest of the family and eating together so they copy you, with small portions and praise for any eating, and no force when food is rejected. NHS: Fussy eaters Same pot, smaller portion, no separate menu.

Screens off, conversation on

Distracted eating overrides fullness cues at every age. Plates at the table, screens parked elsewhere, grown-ups included. Talk about the day, name what is on the plate once, then let it go. A quiet table beats an entertained one.

The script for no

Keep it short and identical every time: that is fine, this is dinner tonight, your safe food is here too. Then stop talking about food. Take rejected food away without comment, stay calm, and serve it again another day. No replacement meal, no short-order cooking.
