Chapter 01The key beneath the teacup
Mina was looking for her blue pencil when she found a silver key beneath the teacup. It was much too small for the front door and much too bright to be ordinary.
When Mina turned it, the teacup became a doorway. A breeze smelling of strawberries rushed out. Mina called for her grandmother, tucked a biscuit in her pocket and stepped through, because some questions are too sparkly to leave unanswered.
Chapter 02The road that changed its mind
On the other side was a road made of blue tiles. It curled left, then right, then politely turned upside down. Mina held the fence while the road decided which way it wanted to go.
A rabbit wearing a waistcoat bowed. ‘Welcome to Elsewhere,’ he said. ‘Please hurry slowly. The Queen needs a question, and you look like someone who carries questions carefully.’ Mina followed him past trees with lanterns for fruit.
Chapter 03The queen who could not sing
The palace stood on four golden legs. Inside, Queen Oriana sat beneath a crown made of paper stars. She was kind, but every time she tried to sing, only a tiny hiccup came out.
‘My garden has lost its song,’ said the Queen. ‘Without it, the flowers will not wake, the bees will not dance and the kingdom will forget how to laugh.’ Mina did not promise to fix everything. She simply asked, ‘When did the song go quiet?’
Chapter 04The clock that sneezed
The palace clock sneezed twelve times. Each sneeze sent a golden minute flying into a bowl. Mina noticed that one minute was upside down.
They followed it to the Clockmaker’s room, where a small clock wore a scarf. ‘The garden song did not disappear,’ it whispered. ‘It hid when everyone started rushing.’ Mina thought of the Queen’s hiccups and wondered if songs needed time as well as sound.
Chapter 05The garden of questions
The garden asked Mina a question before it opened its gate. ‘What grows when you give it away?’ Mina guessed, ‘A smile.’ The gate opened halfway.
Queen Oriana guessed, ‘A secret.’ The gate opened a little more. Mina added, ‘A song, perhaps.’ The flowers leaned toward her. Under the roses, a small green note began to glow.
Chapter 06The tea party for nobody
A long table waited beneath a moon-shaped tree. It had cups for giants, spoons for mice and one empty chair labelled Nobody.
Mina poured tea into every cup, including Nobody’s. Soon the wind sat down. Then a shy cloud. Then a tiny feeling of worry that had been hiding under the table. When everyone had a place, the cloud hummed one clear note.
Chapter 07The Queen’s upside-down crown
Queen Oriana turned her crown upside down. The paper stars fell around her like confetti. ‘I have worn it the same way for years,’ she said. ‘Perhaps the song needs a Queen who can change.’
Mina helped her make a new crown from leaves, ribbon and one silver key. It was crooked and beautiful. The Queen tried to sing again. This time, one warm note floated out and woke a sleeping sunflower.
Chapter 08The river of unfinished things
The glowing note led them to a river filled with half-built bridges, unfinished drawings and cakes waiting for icing. ‘Nobody finishes everything in one day,’ said the rabbit.
Mina placed one plank across the water. The Queen placed another. They crossed slowly, laughing when the bridge wobbled. On the far bank, the little song had become three notes, waiting for a fourth.
Chapter 09The storm of too many thoughts
A purple storm spun above the garden. Inside it flew every thought the kingdom had hurried past: I forgot, what if, not yet and too much.
Mina placed both feet on the grass. She named five things she could see, four things she could feel and three things she could hear. Queen Oriana breathed with her. The storm became a soft violet cloud and rained silver buttons.
Chapter 10The song comes home
The fourth note was hiding inside the Queen’s first question: When did the song go quiet? She had asked it kindly, and kindness had kept listening.
Queen Oriana sang the first note. Mina sang the second. The rabbit hummed the third, and the garden answered with the fourth. Flowers opened, bees danced and the palace legs tapped a happy rhythm.
Chapter 11The key that stayed bright
At the palace door, Queen Oriana gave Mina the silver key. ‘Keep it for questions,’ she said. ‘Every curious child carries a door somewhere.’
Mina stepped back through the teacup and found her blue pencil beside the biscuit she had packed. At breakfast, she told Grandmother about Elsewhere. Grandmother listened, then asked, ‘And what did you learn?’ Mina smiled. ‘That a kingdom can find its song when people make time for one another.’
